Hope; not pressure

In the midst of exam season, we often see a multitude of social media posts telling young people: you are not defined by your exam results.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. If you’re a young person preparing for more exams after half term, you will not be defined by your exam results.

Meanwhile, I’m aware that this statement can be unhelpful without further explanation. You may be thinking “but my exam results will define my future or limit what paths I am able to take on the next stage of my journey.”

By the time results day comes around later this summer, you will have probably spent months studying, stressing, and hoping that all your efforts pay off, leading to those magic letters or numbers. You might feel like you've been carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. And when those results finally land, it will be easy to feel like they're a huge scoreboard for your entire worth. However, a grade on a piece of paper can never capture the incredible, unique person you are.

Think about it. Are your exam results going to tell me about your incredible sense of humour that brightens up a room? Do they show your unwavering loyalty to your friends, or the kindness you showed to someone who was struggling? Do they highlight your amazing talent for music, art, sports, or just being brilliant at making people feel welcome? Absolutely not!

Your value comes from so much more. It comes from your character, your passions, your resilience when things get tough, your empathy for others, and the unique skills and qualities you bring to the world.

Now, this message isn't about saying exams don't matter. They do! They're a stepping stone for many opportunities, and putting in the hard work and dedication in the build-up is incredibly important. It shows your discipline, your commitment, and your ability to persevere.

Sometimes, despite all that effort, results might not go exactly as you hoped. What truly matters is that you gave it your best shot. The skills you developed during revision – time management, problem-solving, critical thinking, the ability to focus – are invaluable, no matter what path you take. They are far more enduring than any single grade. Learning to pick yourself up, understand where things could improve, and move forward is a superpower for life.

If, while scrolling socials on a revision break this week, you see a post that says: you are not defined by your exam results, this is what they mean…

  • You are more than a number. Your potential is vast, and your future is full of possibilities that no single exam can limit. Resilience will enable you to bounce back or adapt if you don’t get the grades you expect.
  • Your character shines brightest. The person you are, your values, and how you treat others – these are the things that truly define your impact on the world.
  • Effort builds character. The hard work you put in, regardless of the outcome, builds crucial life skills and shows your strength.

My hope is that this blog would shift your perspective on the rest of your upcoming exams away from an outlook that builds pressure. You deserve to go into your exams with a resilient, hopeful perspective on the challenge they pose. After all, challenges exist to help us grow, not shrink us into a (metaphorical) life-defining, numbered box.
