Take 5: Just 5 Minutes Can Change the Future
Growing up — and let’s be honest, living — in today’s world isn’t easy. Life moves fast, pressures pile up, and it’s easy to feel disconnected from ourselves and each other.
That’s why Take 5 exists.
It’s a simple reminder that even in the middle of the chaos, five intentional minutes can strengthen wellbeing, build connection, and shape a more hopeful future.
So, whether you’re a parent, teacher, friend, colleague, or young person — here are five simple actions that really can make a difference.
1. Be Present
Why it matters:
When we’re distracted, we miss the moment. Presence tells people, “You matter.” It’s grounding for you and reassuring for others.
Try this:
- Put your phone face down during conversations.
- Take three slow breaths before replying to someone.
- Notice what’s around you — the colours, the sounds, the person in front of you.
💬 You’ll never get this moment again — so be in it.

2. Build Conversations
Why it matters:
Small talk keeps life polite; real talk keeps life connected. When we ask questions that matter, we create space for people to share more of who they are.
Try this:
- Swap “How are you?” for “What’s been the best part of your day?”
- Reconnect with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.
- Share something that made you smile today.
💬 Good conversation isn’t about talking more — it’s about caring more.
3. Ask Questions
Why it matters:
Curiosity is the key to understanding. It helps others feel seen and valued — and it reminds us how much we can still learn.
Try this:
- Ask someone about a memory that always makes them laugh.
- “What’s one thing you’re excited about right now?”
- Show interest in what interests them — even if it’s not your thing.
💬 Great questions open doors that assumptions keep shut.
4. Do Something
Why it matters:
Action fuels connection. Doing something together — however small — helps conversations flow and relationships grow.
Try this:
- Go for a short walk with a friend or colleague.
- Cook, create, play, or volunteer together.
- Send a message, make a cuppa, or do one small thing that says, “I thought of you.”
💬 Shared moments build stronger bonds.
5. Really Listen
Why it matters:
Being listened to is one of the greatest emotional boosts a person can receive. It’s how we show respect, empathy, and love — especially when words aren’t enough.
Try this:
- Don’t rush to fix; just hear them out.
- Reflect back what you’ve heard: “That sounds really tough.”
- Give them your full attention — eyes, ears, and heart.
💬 Listening doesn’t always solve the problem, but it always strengthens the person.
The Take 5 Challenge
You don’t need a big plan or endless time. You just need five minutes and a bit of intention.
Here’s how to start:
- Choose one of the five actions.
- Set a timer for 5 minutes.
- Try it today — at home, at work, in school, or with a friend.
Then tell someone else about it.
Because connection grows when it’s shared.
At Phase, we believe small actions can create lasting change. When we each Take 5, we help build a community where people feel seen, valued, and supported — one moment at a time.
